Inspired by the silence and the cold isolation of arctic landscapes, Finnish composer and multi-instrumentalist Arttu Silvast presents his debut solo album 'Polarity'. Imagined as a 19th-century ship leaving from the coast of Norway heading towards the northern polar regions, 'Polarity' embarks on a journey of discovery of both natural wonders and the inner self.
Combining natural ambience and composed musical passages, 'Polarity' features musical instruments from around the world. There are antique praying bells from Myanmar and percussion instruments from Kenya combined with more traditional Scandinavian instruments like the pump organ and the upright piano. The soundscapes audible in the album were recorded on a trip to Northern Norway and bring this serene 9-track album together with a sense of comforting cohesiveness.
The ‘Polarity’ album cover was taken in Disco Bay, Greenland by Jan Erik Waider from Northlandscapes. Album cover graphic design and typography, including vinyl, by Sami Rouhiainen.
